Employers must ensure they comply with the following to meet Government legislation;

  • Staff training; staff in any business need to be trained in using fire fighting equipment.
  • The correct maintenance and provision of fire equipment; all fire extinguishers in a public enviornment are to be checked by a qualified engineer. This is a legal requirement and proof of such servicing needs to be recorded.
  • Risk Assessments; this includes a full and detailed assessment of the business premises where all fire risks are identified and advice given about how best to minimise the risks and hazards.

The Fire Safety Order states that “Where necessary in order to safeguard the safety of relevant persons, the responsible person must ensure that the premises are equipped with appropriate fire-fighting equipment and fire-fighting equipment is simple to use and indicated by signs. The responsible person must take measures for fire-fighting in the premises and nominate competent persons to implement those measures and ensure that the number of such persons, their training and the equipment available to them is in place."
